We remove cavity wall insulation from homes in Southport, Birkdale, Ainsdale, Churchtown and the rest of PR8 and PR9 when it has become wet, slumped or was put into a wall that was never suited to it. Southport mixes Victorian solid-wall houses with large numbers of twentieth-century cavity homes, so our first job is always to confirm what kind of wall you have and what is inside it.

Victorian villas or 1960s semis: why it matters

Southport has a lot of grand old housing. Many of the Victorian and Edwardian villas around the town centre, Birkdale and Hesketh Park were built with solid brick walls, some later rendered. A solid wall has no cavity, so it cannot suffer from failed cavity insulation, and damp there points to other causes such as defective render, failed pointing or rising moisture at ground level.

Away from the older core, though, the town is full of inter-war semis, post-war bungalows and later estates in Ainsdale, Kew, Crossens and around the edges of Churchtown. These have brick cavity walls and many were filled through energy-efficiency schemes. They are the homes we are usually called to.

A word on rendered houses

Some Southport cavity houses have been rendered, either from new or later on. Render can protect brick well, but once it cracks it can let water in and slow down how quickly the wall dries out. Cracked render over a filled cavity is one of the combinations installers were supposed to avoid, and it is something we look at closely.

Weather off the Ribble estuary and Irish Sea

Southport sits on a flat coastal plain, so there are few hills to shelter houses from westerly and south-westerly rain. Exposure tends to be highest for properties near the seafront and the open land around the marine lakes, and for any wall that faces west across open ground. Elevations facing north-east are usually much drier.

What can go wrong inside a Southport cavity?

  • Fibre that has soaked up water on the windward side and now holds it against the inner leaf.
  • Urea-formaldehyde foam from older installations that has shrunk and crumbled, leaving gaps and dust.
  • Bead fill that has escaped through air bricks or gaps around frames.
  • Building debris left at the base of the cavity, bridging it at floor level.

Older foam is handled differently from fibre and beads; see foam cavity insulation removal for how we approach it. If you are not yet sure the insulation is the cause, our cavity wall insulation problems guide walks through the usual suspects.

From first call to finished wall

When you get in touch we ask about the age of the house, which walls are damp, whether it is rendered and when the cavity was filled. The visit includes moisture readings and a borescope inspection through small holes drilled in the mortar. If extraction is the right answer, we explain the plan and quote in writing.

On a brick house we take out bricks at intervals, use industrial vacuum extraction and compressed air to pull the fill out, clear the base, then recheck the empty cavity before rebuilding. On a rendered house the access method can differ, and we will talk you through the options and the making-good involved before anything starts. A written report with photos follows.

Removing the fill is only half the fix on an exposed Southport wall. Cracked render, worn pointing or a broken downpipe need putting right too, or the new problem will simply be wet brick instead of wet insulation.

Covering Southport and the Sefton coast

Alongside Southport we regularly work in Formby and inland at Maghull. Our cavity wall insulation removal team for Liverpool and Merseyside covers the whole region, and there is more on how we work in our overview of professional cavity wall insulation removal.

Not sure if your Southport house even has a cavity?

Frequently asked questions

Can a Birkdale Victorian house have cavity wall insulation?

Most Victorian houses in Birkdale have solid walls and no cavity, so true cavity insulation is unlikely. Some later extensions, or a small number of earlier cavity-built homes, are exceptions. If you see a pattern of drilled and filled holes in the mortar, ask us to check with a borescope.

My Ainsdale bungalow is rendered. Can you still remove the insulation?

Usually, yes, but the approach is different from bare brick because the render has to be opened and made good afterwards. We assess the render condition first, because cracked render may be part of the reason the fill got wet, and we explain the options before quoting.

Is old foam insulation in a Southport house dangerous to remove?

Urea-formaldehyde foam was common in older installations and can break down into dust and crumbs. Removing it is a specialist job carried out with suitable equipment and dust control. We assess the condition first and explain how we would handle it in your property.

Will removing the insulation stop the damp in my Churchtown semi straight away?

Not immediately. The inner wall needs time to dry once the wet fill is out, which can take weeks or months. Any cause of water entry, such as pointing or gutters, also needs fixing. Some damp has nothing to do with the cavity, which we check for first.

Do you cover both PR8 and PR9?

Yes. We work across Southport, from Birkdale and Ainsdale in PR8 to Churchtown, Crossens and the north of the town in PR9, as well as the surrounding Sefton coast.
