We remove wet and failed cavity wall insulation from homes in Allerton, Mossley Hill and the surrounding L18 streets. Much of Allerton is inter-war semi-detached and detached housing with brick cavity walls, and many were filled in later decades. Being in south Liverpool, these homes are more sheltered than the coast, so when damp appears we check carefully whether the cavity fill is really to blame.
The classic 1930s Allerton semi
Drive along Allerton Road or the avenues off Booker Avenue and Mather Avenue and you see the same pattern repeated: bay-fronted semis, often with hipped roofs, some with pebbledash or render on the upper storey, built mainly between the wars. These houses were usually built with a brick cavity, and the cavities were commonly filled from the 1980s onwards to cut heating bills.
In a sheltered suburb that is often fine. The problems we see in Allerton tend to come from the details rather than the weather itself.
Where 1930s details meet modern fill
- Bay windowsThe joints around bays, and any missing or failed cavity trays above them, can let water into a filled cavity.
- Pebbledash and renderHairline cracks in older render let rain in and slow drying, keeping fill damp.
- Original rubble in the cavityInter-war builders did not always keep cavities clean; debris at the base can bridge filled walls.
- Extensions and porchesJunctions between old and new walls are a common route for water.
Because of this, we do not just put a borescope in one wall and declare the whole house a write-off. We look at each elevation, the condition of the bay and render, and what is happening at ground level. Our cavity wall inspection page explains what that involves.
Is your damp actually condensation?
Inter-war semis can suffer from condensation in cold bedrooms, especially where old windows have been replaced with sealed units and ventilation has dropped. Condensation often shows as mould in corners and behind furniture on several walls, worse in cold, still spells. Damp from a bridged cavity is usually patchier, tied to one or two outside walls, and worse after wind-driven rain. Sometimes both are going on at once. The damp after cavity insulation page goes into the differences.
Our approach in Allerton
- A call back to ask about the house, the affected rooms and when the insulation went in.
- A visit with moisture readings inside and borescope checks on the relevant elevations.
- A clear explanation of what we found and whether removal is the right fix, with a written quote.
- Extraction by removing bricks at intervals and using industrial vacuum and compressed air, then clearing the base.
- A second borescope check, rebuilding with matched pointing as closely as practical, and a written report with photos.
Where bay windows or rendered sections are involved, we explain how they will be handled before work starts.
Refill or leave empty?
In a sheltered Allerton street, refilling with a suitable material after the walls have dried is often a reasonable option, provided any defects are put right first. Our refilling after removal page explains what to consider.
We also cover neighbouring Woolton, Childwall and Garston. To read about our wider cavity wall insulation removal in Liverpool, or to understand the factors behind the price, see the cost guide.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the damp in my Allerton semi worst around the bay window?
Bays have more joints, flashings and window details than flat walls, and older ones may lack an effective cavity tray. If the cavity is filled, water getting in at that point can be carried across to the inside. We inspect the bay in particular, because the fix may be a tray or flashing rather than full extraction.
My upper floor is pebbledashed. Does that affect removal?
It can. We usually take bricks out at the lower level where the wall is bare, but if the fill above has to be reached through rendered areas, there is making-good to consider. We will explain the approach and what the finished render will look like before quoting.
Is Allerton too sheltered for cavity insulation to get wet?
South Liverpool is more sheltered than the coast, but filled cavities can still get wet through defects, debris in the cavity, cracked render or gutters overflowing. Exposure is one factor among several, so we look at the whole wall rather than ruling the cavity in or out by location.
Do you cover Mossley Hill as well as Allerton?
